PERSONAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIP

Personal Health Partnership will enable me to spend the time with my patients that they need and should have - time which is so important to health and well-being.  In this partnership, we will strive together to maintain health, prevent illness, and keep you feeling well.

WELCOME TO PERSONAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIP

Personal Health Partnership is a membership entity established  by Board Certified Internist and Primary Care Physician Edward M. Dean, M.D. of Elm Street Adult Medicine, P.C., Northampton, Massachusetts.

Those who become "members" through Personal Health Partnership will have access to a range of value-added "Personalized Services" which are designed to enhance the members' overall health care experience as well as ready access to Edward M. Dean, M.D. through Elm Street Adult Medicine as their personal primary care physician.  These Personalized Services are not professional services, and are not covered by health insurance so members will be obliged to pay a modest membership fee for those services.

Many have asked me how current changes in medicine including healthcare reform affect my practice.  Unfortunately, changes in the healthcare system have made it increasingly difficult for me to provide my patients with the best, personalized care.  Practices like mine are increasingly besieged with vast amounts of paperwork and administrative tasks, including the need to obtain prior authorizations (for things including prescription medicines, specialized tests, and referrals); excessive documentation requirements; and the like.  From an economic standpoint, running a medical practice has become far more expensive, while insurance payments for medical services have not kept up.  The combination of administrative tasks and economic constraints has made it nearly impossible for me to offer my patients the kind of individualized attention they deserve; and I now find myself extending office hours through lunch, and spending evenings and weekends doing the "paper work" so that I can spend more time with my patients.  It is not surprising that few physicians are currently entering primary care medicine, many current ones are retiring early, and other current primary care physicians are turning to non-primary care positions of various types, still further straining primary care medicine.  In fact, most health care commentators forecast that private primary care medicine practices like mine will cease to exist, as larger practices and hospitals buy out smaller practices.  Northampton is no exception to this trend.

So, I have arrived at a crossroad and, after exploring the options, I have decided to make a change.  I considered seeing still more patients every day, but that would have further limited time per patient visit.  I also considered selling my practice to either a local or regional hospital or large medical group, but that would have taken away my autonomy and likely would have affected the level of personalized service that I and my office could offer.  So I considered  - and decided to establish - a unique kind of practice called a membership practice; a kind of practice that will let me once again offer my patients the best, personalized care.

Implementing a membership model practice through Personal Health Partnership will cause me to limit the size of my medical practice somewhat, and enable me to spend the time with my patients that they need and should have - time which is so important to health and well-being.  In this partnership, we will strive together to maintain health, prevent illness, and keep you feeling well.
